Professor Dr. April Roslani graduated from the University of Wales, College of Medicine in 1995, and received Universiti Malaya’s Master of Surgery in 2003. After completing a colorectal surgery fellowship in the National University Hospital Singapore in 2007, she established University Malaya Medical Centre’s (UMMC) Colorectal Surgery Unit, which is now the largest in the country, and a key stakeholder in colorectal training and services nationally and regionally. She was Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya from 2020 to 2024. She is a Past-President of the Malaysian Society of Colorectal Surgeons, the College of Surgeons, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia and the Asia Pacific Federation of Coloproctology. Recognizing that more effective and seamless delivery of training was needed to increase surgical capacity to meet the nation’s healthcare needs, she led the development of a National Postgraduate Medical Curriculum (NPMC) for general surgery, and spearheaded the development and delivery of the NPMC Train-the-Trainers curricula and courses. During her tenure as chair of the Conjoint Committee for Postgraduate Medical Degrees, she facilitated the alignment of specialist training curricula across all specialties to regulatory standards. She is currently a Council member for the Academy of Medicine Malaysia, the Malaysian Medical Council, and the International Surgical Society. She has recently been appointed as a Director of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh’s International Office. Through these and other related roles, she works towards advancing surgical standards, and fairness in the workplace. Her work has been recognized by the international surgical fraternity, through numerous Honorary Fellowship awards, including most recently from the American and Philippine Societies of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and the American College of Surgeons.
