Brief Introduction: Dr. Chen was born in Yangmei District, Taoyuan City, Taiwan in 1972. He graduated from National Yang-Ming University School of Medicine in 1999 and completed his surgical residency at Taipei Veterans General Hospital and Koo Foundation Sun Yat-Sen Cancer Center (KFSYSCC). Since July 2004, Dr. Chen has been an Attending Colorectal Surgeon at KFSYSCC, currently serving as deputy chief in the Department of Surgery and chairperson of the multidisciplinary colorectal cancer committee. In 2007, Dr. Chen enhanced the use of abdominal laparoscopy and developed a postoperative recovery program. He completed advanced laparoscopy training under Dr. Jeffrey Milsom at Weill-Cornell Presbyterian Hospital in 2009 and introduced single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) at KFSYSCC. In May 2013, he performed his first transanal total mesorectal excision (TaTME), publishing Asia’s first case series on TaTME in Surgical Endoscopy in 2015 and a comparative analysis in Annals of Surgical Oncology. Dr. Chen organized Taiwan’s first TaTME workshop in 2016 and has been a presenter and trainer at international sessions since 2018. KFSYSCC became the first Asian center in the COLOR III trial under his leadership. He also explores robotics-assisted surgery for colorectal cancer, with published articles in international journals. Since 2005, Dr. Chen has lectured at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University School of Medicine and contributed to the Taiwan National Cancer Registry. He has been involved in the Taiwan National Health Research Institutes Colorectal Cancer Committee since 2011 and was appointed as an instructor of Surgical Oncology to the Taiwan Oncology Society in 2012. He joined the editorial board of the Asian Journal of Surgery in 2019. Currently, Dr. Chen is one of two certified robotic surgery instructors in Taiwan and has organized over 20 advanced robotic surgery workshops since 2021. He represents the Taiwan Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons in discussions with the National Health Insurance Administration and helps develop certification criteria for robotic surgery physicians.
