My name is James Emmanuel, and I currently serve as a Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
My journey in medicine began with my undergraduate studies at Melaka Manipal Medical College (MMMC), where I am forever indebted to the passionate professors who laid the foundation for my medical career. After completing my housemanship training at Kuala Lumpur General Hospital in 2011, I pursued an opportunity to serve in the state of Sabah. It was during this time that I obtained my membership in the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP UK) in March 2013.
In August 2022, I completed my Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellowship Training programme. During this transformative period, I had the privilege of undergoing a fellowship stint at the prestigious Humanitas Research Hospital in Milan, Italy. Under the mentorship of Professor Alessandro Repici and Professor Cesare Hassan, both renowned figures in the field, I delved deep into the intricacies of Adcanced Endoscopy and gained invaluable insights, particularly in the realm of Artificial Intelligence studies. Additionally, I draw inspiration from local stalwarts in Gastroenterology, Datuk Dr. Ryan Ponnudurai, Datuk Dr Raman Muthukaruppan and Dato' Dr Mahendra Raj. Their unwavering dedication to advancing the quality of training in Gastroenterology in Malaysia serves as a guiding light for my own professional journey.
I achieved significant milestones by passing the USMLE examination and the European Specialty Examination in Gastroenterology and Hepatology (ESEGH) in 2020. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of presenting at various national and international conferences, contributing to the global discourse on Gastroenterology. These opportunities have not only enriched my knowledge but have also allowed me to forge meaningful connections within the academic community.
In recognition of my expertise, I have been appointed as a reviewer for esteemed journals such as the American Journal of Gastroenterology (AJG), Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology (JGH), PLOS One, and World Journal of Gastroenterology (WJG). It is a responsibility that I take with utmost seriousness, contributing to the advancement of scientific knowledge in my field.
